The art of replacing systems

A leading Swiss luxury watch company replaced the refrigeration system at its headquarters after 14 years. Particularly challenging: the placement.

Replacing a refrigeration system is a complex task that requires careful planning and expertise.

Narrow, winding and long corridors

Replacement during ongoing operation or installation in confined spaces - replacement projects for a refrigeration system have their own challenges and requirements. In this case, the placement was demanding: narrow, winding and long corridors required the project managers to take precise consideration of the dimensions of the new chiller during the planning stage in order to ensure a smooth installation. Occasionally, a refrigeration system is built in such a way that it is brought in in several parts and fully assembled on site. This was the case with this watch manufacturer, where the compressors were brought in disassembled and reassembled on site. The selection of a suitable chiller in terms of capacity and dimensions, careful and precise project monitoring and the technical expertise and experience of the specialists involved led to a successful installation and commissioning.

Replacement systems and their challenges

Replacing an existing refrigeration system or industrial heat pump is a complex undertaking that requires careful planning and expertise. When a refrigeration system has to be replaced after around 20 years, tight space conditions, such as in the example of this horological manufacture, are just one aspect that needs to be taken into account. After such a long time, the requirements for the system have often changed: On the one hand, buildings are used differently, resulting in different heating or cooling requirements. On the other hand, legal regulations and general conditions have also changed over time. Seamless integration into the existing system is also of great importance and requires, for example, adjustments to the control and regulation systems as well as to the interfaces to other systems or processes.

Integration often during ongoing operation

Once the decision has been made in favour of a new system, it must be integrated and installed in such a way that operations are disrupted as little as possible. This work is often carried out during ongoing operations. Careful planning is therefore important to ensure that the new system functions efficiently, is seamlessly integrated and meets the requirements - with the aim of minimising operational interruptions and environmental impact. Thanks to its extensive and diverse expertise, CTA is able to support its customers during plant replacements in such a way that they

The chiller used

The Swiss watch manufacturer opted for the water-cooled i-FX2-W chiller. This standard machine achieves excellent performance figures and impresses with its low HFO refrigerant charge. Two speed-controlled screw compressors with regulated Vi ensure that the system constantly adapts to the company's temperature requirements. Thanks to the hybrid evaporator technology, this system achieves the same energy efficiency as a flooded system - and with a significantly lower refrigerant charge. An important environmental and sustainability aspect.
