Modern large heat pumps are powerful heat suppliers that can easily provide temperatures of 80 °C and more. And if a heat source of more than 30 °C can be utilised, they are true efficiency champions. This also benefits the young, innovative company SwissShrimp AG, which produces high-quality shrimp for the Swiss market in Rheinfelden. Not only does it use the salt from the neighbouring Riburg salt works of the Swiss salt works, the valuable (waste) heat generated during salt production is just as important.
The heat supply is ensured by the Rheinfelden Rüchi heating network operated by energy supplier AEW Energie AG. This has been utilising the waste heat from salt production for over ten years. SwissShrimp AG is a new customer for the "salt heat". AEW Energie AG therefore decided to expand the heating centre in 2018: a customised heat pump developed and produced in Switzerland delivers an output of more than 700 kW with a COP of 3.73.
Heating network Rheinfelden Rüchi
Heat source: Mainly waste heat from Swiss salt mines
Basic expansion: 2007-2009
Heat output: 8.4 megawatts (MW)
Heat requirement per year: 18,400 megawatt hours (MWh)
Heat energy coverage from salt works per year: approx. 13,000 MWh
CO2 savings: 2,600 tonnes per year
Savings in heating oil: 1 million litres per year
Salt production generates high-temperature waste heat (85 °C) and low-temperature waste heat (30 °C). The high-temperature waste heat can be utilised directly. The 30 °C low-temperature waste heat is raised to the required 85 °C in the heating centre using the CTAexclusive industrial heat pump. The advantage of the heat pump is that it provides the necessary heat even when the high-temperature waste heat is not available. It therefore guarantees an uninterrupted heat supply.
CTA's industrial heat pump emphasises the potential of heat pump technology for industrial and commercial applications, for entire sites and heating networks that rely on flow temperatures of more than 80 °C. The higher the temperature of the heat source, the greater the potential. The higher the temperature of the heat source, the more efficiently the heat pump works. With exemplary key performance indicators (COP of 3.5 including the auxiliary units), the system in Rheinfelden demonstrates that a sustainable, CO2-free energy future is possible in the food industry thanks to renewable heat sources.
