Renewable heating in a heritage-protected building

The Schenini family lives in a sustainably inhabited house. Sustainable, because this timber-framed building has allowed people to live here for generations. It is now also heated sustainably: the old oil-fired heating system has been replaced by a CTA ground-source heat pump.

The timber-framed house, typical of the region, stands in a hamlet in an idyllic location not far from a nature reserve with a pond. A place with history. A place to which care is taken. The owners therefore wanted to heat the house with renewable energy in the future. Verena and Silvio Schenini therefore clarified which type of heat pump would make the most sense for them.

Heating with air or geothermal energy

Finally, an air/water or a geothermal probe heat pump (brine/water) was permitted and considered. During the clarifications for an air/water heat pump, it was discovered that the seepage water pipe and the sewage system would have to be considerably extended - with the corresponding cost consequences. The investment in a brine/water heat pump therefore came into focus. Since this winter, the Schenini family has been heating with heat from the ground.

Constructive neighbourly cooperation

It was not only the cooperation between the client, the installer and CTA that contributed to the success of the project. The neighbourly relationship was so constructive that the heating renovation went like clockwork: The Schenini family obtained all the necessary permits without any problems. During the drilling work, the equipment and vehicles were even allowed to be parked on the neighbour's land.

Future photovoltaic system also planned

The client not only lives in their house, but also runs a B&B in this listed building of local importance. The fluctuating number of residents was taken into account in the dimensioning and design of the heating system. It was also planned that a photovoltaic system would supply solar power at a later date. Accordingly, the boiler was generously dimensioned with 500 litres. The electrical insert was prepared in such a way that the PV system can later be integrated via a PV control system - i.e. an energy manager.

The heat pump used

In this project, a stage-controlled brine-to-water heat pump from the Optiheat series was used (OH 1-11es All-in-One). Geothermal energy is thus used for heating and for heating the domestic hot water in the flats. The space-saving all-in-one unit is so quiet that it is barely audible. It is suitable for new buildings and for heating replacement in single-family homes. As with all CTA heat pumps, the warranty on this unit can be extended to up to 12 years after commissioning with the CTAplus offer.
